Why do I need a physical?

By October 29, 2014Blog

A physical is a general examination by a doctor that is meant to get an overview of a person’s health, or to determine whether a person is fit for certain types of physical activity. It may be required by a place of employment, for children to play sports, or as a general screen for medical conditions. It is the best way to keep abreast of your health, and yearly physicals are important.

What is a physical?

A physical is a series of examinations that are routine and simple. It isn’t painful, and is usually over pretty quickly! This test involves the following components:patient getting his blood pressure taken by a doctor

  • Height and weight
  • Computation of BMI (Body Mass Index)
  • Urinalysis
  • Listening to heartbeat
  • Checking of the ears, eyes, throat, and nose
  • Getting blood pressure
  • Flexibility testing
  • Assessment of spinal curvature
  • Checking the abdomen

Why do schools require physicals?

Some schools require their students to have yearly physicals. This is to ensure that the child is developing properly. Early detection with things like scoliosis or eye problems can be much easier on the child, as the problems can be treated before they are serious. Students are also required to keep their immunization records up to date. Children must complete their immunizations for mumps, measles, rubella, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, and polio. Sports programs also require physicals. They want to make sure the child is in perfect health before attempting vigorous physical activity.

Why do some employers require physicals?

If an employer requires a physical, it is usually to determine if an employee has the capacity to perform the work that is required by the company. Some jobs require a certain level of physical health, and things like asthma or heart conditions can disqualify a person from getting a job. Ensuring that all of the employees are within certain limits of health can also reduce risks in the workplace – giving the other employees a safer place to work. If a person does not meet the criteria set forth by the employer, their job offer may be rescinded, or they won’t be offered the job at all. In some cases, as long as the person agrees to the treatment for their ailment, they may still be offered the job. It all depends on the employer in question.

Early detection is critical when it comes to some medical conditions, so having a yearly physical is very important. Even if physicals aren’t required by your school or work, you need to stay on top of your health. Don’t have a primary care physician? Come to the urgent care and we will get you checked out!
