What is a COVID-19 rapid test?
Rapid antigen tests can return results showing whether the patient is infected with acute COVID-19 on the same day, as opposed to the 3-5 day estimated wait for most nasal swab tests. A medical assistant or health care provider will swab the back of the throat or nasal cavity for approximately 15 seconds to gather a saliva or mucus sample. This sample will then be tested in a laboratory.
The COVID-19 rapid test only confirms whether the virus is currently present. It does not test for antibodies, which would indicate a person has been previously infected. It isn’t a test to identify whether other viruses are present, including other seasonal coronaviruses.
Thibodaux Regional Urgent Care – Thibodaux uses the Sofia SARS Antigen Fluorescent Immunoassay (FIA) for the rapid COVID-19 test. This is a state-of-the-art technology to detect nucleocapsid proteins indicating the presence of SARS-CoV-2, which is the disease that causes COVID-19.
If you or a loved one is experiencing one or more symptoms of COVID-19, visit your local urgent care to get a COVID-19 rapid test. Our physicians and medical assistants are available between 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Mon-Fri for drive-by or walk-in COVID-19 rapid testing.
